IC-7300 description :

The ICOM IC7300 is a multi-band transceiver with high performance and compact case. This ICOM employs an RF direct sampling system. RF signals are directly converted to digital data and processed in the FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array, see below). making it possible to simplify the circuit construction. The new IP+ function improves 3° order intercept point performance, when a weak signal is received adjacent to strong interference the ADC device is optimized against signal distortion. For user interface, operation and dimensions the IC-7300 is a HF counterpart of the IC-9700 for V/UHF. The IC-7300 also improve the reciprocal mixing dynamic range and phase noise characteristics compared to the IC-7200. The superior phase-noise values reduce noise components in both receive and transmit signals. On receiver front-end the IC7300 has 15 discrete RF bandpass filters, high Q factor coils are used to minimize the loss and magnify the out-of-band rejection. On transmitter side a built-in automatic antenna tuner memorizes its settings based on your frequency, so that it can rapidly tune when you change operating bands while the enforced tuning function allows a wide range of temporary antennas to be tuned.

Main features: Class leading real-time spectrum scope with high resolution, sweep speed and dynamic range. While listening to received audio, you can check the real-time scope and quickly move to an intended signal. When you first touch the screen around the intended signal, the touched part is magnified. A second touch of the screen changes the operating frequency and allows you to accurately tune. The scope system adopt FFT with sweep speed max of 30 frames/second and span width 5-1000 kHz. Waveform display area, vertical axis, is 80dB with reference level adjustment from -20dB to +20dB. The waterfall function shows a change of signal strength over a period of time and allows you to find weak signals that may not be apparent on the spectrum scope.

Real-Time Spectrum Scope Specifications
Scope systemFast Fourier Transform
Sweep speedMax 30 frames/second. Selectable from slow, mid or fast
Span width5 kHz to 1 MHz
Peak level hold functionON / OFF / last 10 seconds
Other functionsAveraging indication.
Touch screen operation.
VBW (Video Band Width) adjustment.

When monitoring a weak signal that is buried in the noise floor, or monitoring a strong signal but some stronger signals are nearby, you can adjust the Reference level of the screen, this helps to see these signals. Demo screen:

The IC-7300 has two spectrum scope modes. One is the Center mode, and another one is the Fixed mode. You can also turn the Waterfall display ON or OFF. In addition, you can select a Mini scope screen to save screen space.

The audio scope function can be used to observe various characteristics such as microphone compressor level, filter width, notch filter width and keying waveform in the CW mode. Either the transmit or receive audio can be displayed.

IF filter shape: The SHARP selection emphasize the passband width of the filter. The filter has an almost ideal shape factor, signals of the out of passband are extremely filtered out and it gives you better audio quality. In SOFT selection the filter shoulders are roundly formed as in analog networks. This decreases noise components in the high and low frequencies of the filter passband and increases the Signal-to-Noise of the target signal. These characteristics play an effective role in picking up very weak signals. The transceiver has 3 IF filter passband widths for each mode:

Memory card slot: The IC-7300 can store various content on an SD-card such as received and transmitted audio, voice memories, RTTY/CW memories, RTTY decode logs and captured screen images. Personal and firmware update data can also be stored on the card for easy setting. Multi-function meter: Displays the receiving signal strength level (S), relative RF output power (Po), SWR, ALC, compression level when the speech compressor is used (COMP), drain voltage of the final amplifier (VD), drain current of the final amplifier (ID), temperature of the final amplifier (TEMP).

IC-7300 in comparison with IC-7100 and IC-7200 :

The ICOM IC-7300's Reciprocal Mixing Dynamic Range (RMDR) is improved to about 100 dB at 2 kHz frequency separation, +15 dB compared to the IC-7100 and +20 dB compared to the IC-7200. Phase Noise characteristics are also improved about 15~20 dB at 2 kHz frequency offset compared to the IC-7100/IC-7200. The superior Phase Noise characteristics, see figure, reduce noise components in both receive and transmit signals.

The above RMDR and Phase Noise at frequency: 14.2 MHz, MODE: CW, IF bandwidth: 500 Hz. Phase Noise is referenced to the transmission signal.

The "Tuner Socket" accepts the control cable from an optional AH-4 automatic antenna tuner or AH-740 automatic tuning antenna. When the "SEND" terminal controls an inductive load, such as a relay, a counter-electromotive force can malfunction or damage the transceiver. To prevent this, ICOM recommend adding a switching diode on the load side of the circuit to absorb the counter-electromotive force.
