The Rockwell Collins HF-2050 is a ibrid analog/digital receiver with input range from 14 KHz (VLF band) up to 30 MHz (HF band). On 0.5 to 30 MHz the receiver adopt an up-conversion at 99 MHz were a crystal filter provide the first selectivity, for 0.014 to 0.5 MHz band instead all signals will be translate to mid-HF before its application to the first mixer. After the second IF an Analog-to-Digital circuit convert the tuned signal for the DSP, within the processors are the firmware algorithms to perform the CW/SSB/AM filter responses and demodulations.

Front panel controls have been thoughtfully designed for quick access to all operating parameters. Tuning is accomplished by the numeric keypad, with tuning knob (rate selectable), with preset channels, via remote control interface. The HF2050 has a Built-in-Test Equipment (BITE) for fault isolation to the card level. In overal terms the Collins HF2050 exhibit a high performance front-end, with +25dBm of IP3, and a low noise local oscillator synthesizer. Other features include the noise blanker (NB) with adjustable threshold, ±4000 Hz BFO, voice-squelch (with signal-to-noise detector), selectable AGC, 100 regular memories (each channel containing mode, bandwidth, AGC, BFO), remote control interface, high Mean-Time-Between-Failure (MTBF) value. Optional features on the other hand include the external preselector port, FSK modem, ISB demodulator.

HF-2050 performance and practical notes :

The Collins HF-2050 is a robust desktop radio with built-in RF overload protection circuit, the receiver is protected to +47dBm at antenna input. High grade is also the reciprocal mixing, for a desired signal of 1uV and an undesired signal of 700mV located 200 kHz away from the tuned frequency (on 2~30 MHz band) the S/N ratio shall not be degraded to less than 5 dB.
