DE1106 description :

This Degen is a compact portable radio with double conversion covering FM broadcasting band and the complete range that goes from 150 KHz of the long waves to 30.000 KHz of the short waves, both in AM and in SSB. In addition to these, the DE1106 distinguishes itself by being able to tune the 117 to 137 MHz range corresponding to the VHF band dedicated to aeronautical traffic. Tuning: coarse and fine rotary control (for the SSB a BFO type with fine steps), keyboard direct entry, with recall from memories, with scan. In AM reception you can select two bandwidth values, narrow and wide, so as to improve listening conditions in the presence of emissions on adjacent channels. Also to optimize the reception of the broadcasting stations, the DE-1106 allows to demodulate the signals in the synchronous AM mode (AM-sync), this function rarely present in the world receiver allows in some circumstances to extract a cleaner audio favoring the listening of distant stations or anyway affected by particular interferences or fading or also rapid and sudden weakening of the signal.

Other details: Telescopic antenna for SW / FM / VHF, internal ferrite antenna for LW / MW between 150~1710 KHz, input for external SW antenna. Good sized LCD display with frequency / time indication, signal level / battery charger, RDS information for FM stations. RF attenuator in the LW / MW / SW bands. Auto sleep timer between 1~99 minutes, four alarms with programmable power-on. Alkaline or rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, integrated battery charger with charge cycle setting between 1~36 hours. 700 locations on non-volatile memory, ie data are not lost due to the discharge or replacement of the batteries.

DE1106 performance and practical notes :

The DE1106 is a truly optimal price / performance ratio receiver. Although being an cheap model offers some interesting features. The synchronous AM is one of these options. Another aspect worthy of mention concerns RDS. In fact, the user can activate this function to display on the front display the alphanumeric identification that accompanies almost all stations in the FM band. The RDS is disabled as default, the same button that enables it if pressed several times will show on the LCD different data fields (if transmitted) such as station classification, on-air contextual or relevant messages, the time reference. The decoding of this set of information will undoubtedly be appreciated by FM enthusiasts who see in most country a spectrum full of stations. About the possibility of tuning the aeronautical band it is immediate to make the association with another receiver, the PL-660 by Tecsun, considered an equivalent for many points of view. In practice it is found that Degen achieves a modest sensitivity on 117~137 MHz, the performances are in this band not exciting and therefore the guaranteed bonus in the specifications should be understood as a VHF window where you can listen to only the nearby stations.

I purchased a DE1106 via TaoBao and its price was about 170 US Dollars. Still performing very good. It is true that AM is not that good but it's good enough. FM works perfect and SW is on par with Tecsun PL-600 and in some radio stations, performs even better and more sensitive. It has a harsh sound when turning on the "Wide" function but can be attenuated by pressing the SYNC button. From time to time I catch some conversation in the Airband.

I love the memories and the fact that I can label each set of memory slots. I stored my DE1106 (without AA batteries of course) for around 3 years (maybe 4) and my favorite stored radio stations were still there! Incredible.

The light blue color of the screen is very elegant.

Not a bad radio. It's a little noisy sometimes but it is also elegant. That special soft blue background color or the lamp is wonderful. The stored bands are stored seems like forever because I put my DE1106 to rest for around 3 years and the radio station that I stored are still there!

I have this radio since 2008, and it wasn't cheap for me. I bought two of this, for my and from my cousin, both are Ham Operators. I was dissapointing from the first days of usage especially for the Lowers Bands Sensitivity. Is almost "deaf" on LW/MW, quite good in middle/upper HF and Aircraft Bands (unfortunatelly Not At All scanning option in Airband!). The HF SSB works fine, and also the Sync SSB works but not always. Also in LW/MW bands due to the Low Sensitivity, and maybe and from other "bad" technical electronic construction and not good "interference insulation / filters", the "harmonics" of the Display/Circuit are "split" in these Bands in many frequencies, with multi-annoying noises. I was trying to hear an Airport LW beacon (353KHz Aktio GR) 5 miles away from here, and a Display Harmonic "tap on" the particular frequency!!!! The problem of Display harmonics getting much worse if you Turn On and the Light in Display!!!!

The FM Band has Very Good sensitivity, and very good+ quality Sound but Not Such a Good Selectivity. In 76-87MHz Band it re-produce some upper-band strong FM Radio Stations (IF +10.7MHz x 2). With good quality headphones in FM you have Superb Stereo and Very Quality Sound!!!! Very good RDS operation in FM Band (RDS not works in Lower 76-87 band) and almost Full RDS Useful Functions (Almost: because doesn't shows the PI Station Code, because in DX is useful to recognize the Country of the Radio Station). Very Good Stereo Image, but unfortunatelly no Mono/Stereo selectable "switch", so when a station is week the stereo signal come and goes automatically "on/off" and you can't disable the MPX Decoder to have standard / stable clear listening mono image.

The Signal Strength works but is "half-fake", because it has detailed Signal Numbers 1-9 (0-10) and detailed Lines (mini-bars), but ... in fact works as a 5 Bar Thick Strength Meter!!!! It will be perfect if it have dB's and S/N numeric meters than that @fake bar meter. It needs Very good Quality and as much higher Value of mAh's AA batteries so to last longer the working operation because the Big Display has very high power consumption. The "degen" AA batteries that comes with the radio have very good quality (still in 2019 works in other radios) but are only 1300mAh and are not quite Enough for this radio. I replaced the "degen" AA batteries with 2700mAh Ultra High Quality AA batteries and i "see" Huge difference in time working operation. I Still Keeping this Radio only for the Good Quality FM Stereo / RDS Reception, The Good Quality Sound, the very friendly / easy use operation, and for some other features, such as Memories, Clock, multi-Snooze ... and big display.

There are functions that do not have other similar radios on the same market range, sophisticated features such as synchronous detection that works in my opinion very well and the Radio Data System in FM. The small DEGEN is also equipped with the aeronautical band that is not very sensitive, but it is still managed more than enough. Other examples of interesting options are the ability to assign names to memorized stations, a convenience that is appreciated in the continuous use of the radio.

Regarding the quality of the sound is such as to compensate for other shortcomings, in FM reception is superb while the RDS function proves very useful because it offers complete information. As a comparison the DE1103 (ideal predecessor of this model, ed.) Is not so performing in FM and even leaves a bit 'perplexed because the sound is slightly disturbed in this band while it has no rival in the bands LW / MW and SW. The Degen DE1106 has been criticized in particular for the reception in AM, but in my opinion made the right comparisons did not seem so poor as it is described, indeed thanks to its quality audio reception in AM is more than acceptable. In SW it behaves very well and listening is not bad thanks to a set of options and filters that can improve reception. The top, however, would have been a DEGEN DE1106 with AM reception equivalent to DE1103.
