RadioJet 1102S description :

The 1102S RadioJet is an ibrid technology receiver with peculiarities in its project. A unique solution when compared to the other receivers that rely on a PC for their operation. The internal architecture adopts a first up-conversion with intermediate frequency (IF) on 45 MHz, here a 10-pole quartz filter with a 16 KHz bandwidth determines the selectivity for the remaining part of the circuit. This structure is completely analogical and substantially conventional in form, the originality in the Bonito model is determined by how the signal is processed after this first conversion. In fact, it follows a direct low-frequency conversion with the signal sampled by two ADCs and transferred via USB port to the computer through the same protocol as a standard two-channel stereo audio. The receiver at the hardware level does not have AGC and the analog / digital converters have the characteristic of receiving at their inputs a different dynamic-range of the same signal, in particular the right channel operates on the normal amplitude range while the left channel on a range amplified by 40 dB. The result is that if a wide-amplitude output saturates the left channel, the right channel can still process the signal correctly. The combination of the two numerical flows allows the software to reconstruct and manage both the extremely weak and the strong components with high resolution and low distortion. It is therefore an SDR apparatus that distinguishes itself from others.

The performances are interesting, the sensitivity is very high with a useful dynamic-range of equal value. Among the software functions are the regulation of selectivity and IF-shift, PBT, notch filter, digital noise reduction (DNR), squelch that can also be set in relation to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Very wide the capacity to manage memories and tuning modes, there is no lack of functions such as oscilloscope / spectrum analysis with 3D graphics that is characterized by zoom for a resolution of only 1 Hz so as to highlight the smallest details. The analysis covers nominally 24 KHz (16 KHz operating bandwidth determined by the first conversion filter). Among the operating modes there is a integrated DRM decoded, without requiring the installation of a VAC (Virtual Audio Cable) as it is for other SDR receivers. The software interface is complete but relatively simple to use so as to meet both the needs of common listeners and DXers.

RadioJet 1102S software

The S-meter and spectrum analyzer report the intensity in dBm units with the possibility to calibrate the scale. The software incorporates a database for the management of the frequencies / radio stations, as an option there is available the module for the decoding of RTTY, CW, PSK, SSTV, FAX systems. The minimum configuration requires the use of a computer with Windows XP SP3 or higher and at least 1 GB of RAM.

RadioJet 1102S performance and practical notes :

The 1102S hardware core its also integrated on RadioJet 1305 PLUS with frequency coverage extension to V/UHF. On the practical side, the 1102S RadioJet highlights two elements of the opposite sign. A negative aspect is the good, but certainly not optimal, rejection of the image frequencies due to the low-IF second frequency conversion. A drawback related directly to the use, in the circuits, of a digital acquisition system of only 48 Ksps. On the positive side, however, is the proven Plug and Play functionality of the Bonito receiver, the user is not faced with complicated installation and setting procedures since the computer basically sees the apparatus as an external USB sound card that interconnects without the need of specific drivers.
