DX-R8 description :

The DX-R8 brings the presence of Alinco in the HF sector with a receiver of interesting features. The front panel design outlines an appreciable ease of use in relation to the many control functions. Furthermore, the same panel is separable (the optional EDS-17 kit includes cables and small mechanical parts) allowing the displacement up to 5 meters away from the body of the apparatus. The mobile use is therefore facilitated. Another element to underline is the availability of the tuned signal as output in I / Q analog format (in-phase and quadrature) with ±20 KHz bandwidth, This allows to acquire the two components through the normal audio connections of a PC in order to process, demodulate and record transmissions as an SDR.

The receiver adopts a double conversion configuration. All the main parameters are displayed on the large LCD display that dominates the front panel. All modes, IF-shift to move the filter band-pass with respect to the tuned frequency, RIT, AM selectable IF bandwidth, audio filter (500 Hz wide) for CW, RF preamplifiers, RF attenuator, noise-blanker, squelch, shutdown timer. Tuning can be set by rotary control, with direct input from the keyboard, from PC. Segment-bar signal meter (S-meter) with a resolution that allows to measure variations of 3dB in the intensity up to S9. Scan modes: memory, Frequency limits. 600 memories are available in three separate banks.

DX-R8 performance and practical notes :

The Alinco DX R8 receiver can nominally tune down from just 40 KHz. Up to 150 KHz, however, the sensitivity is very low and not guaranteed by specifications. Pay attention to this aspect if you want to use the receiver in VLF band. Excellent audio performance also guaranteed by the favorable position of the speaker even if of modest size, a qualitative aspect for the ratings in AM broadcasting listening. Availability of the signal in I/Q format: this is an option that adds considerable flexibility to the DX-R8, which in this way is not limited by the internal demodulation functions. In this choice the Alinco has met an effective need for advanced enthusiasts.
