AR-8200 Mark III description :

AR-8200 Mark III is a scanner with remarkable features and interesting solutions that add flexibility to its use. It has 2 VFO, thus offering a very practical operating mode and very similar to what happens in the desktop receivers, the panoramic spectrum analyzer allows instead to display the radio activity within a range from 100 KHz up to 10 MHz. On spectrum analyzer a marker can be moved to one of the signals so as to automatically tune the VFO and, for further analysis, the track can be saved so that it can be recalled at a later time. Another important detail is the possibility of inserting expansions on slot-cards, which are also compatible with the AR-8600 receiver, so as to customize the use according to the listening needs. The five cards available are:

VI8200
Voice inverter, adjustable in 157 steps
CT8200
CTCSS squelch and search decoder
TE8200
Notch filter, audio tone eliminator in 256 steps
RU8200
Audio recording and playback, 20 seconds approx, also with continuous loop
EM8200
Extended memory with 4000 memories, 160 search banks

AR-8200 Mark III other features :

AM and FM mode intermediate frequency (IF) filters selection with different bandwidths, high frequency stability with temperature compensated oscillator (TCXO), noise limiter, RF attenuator, squelch, separable ferrite antenna for Medium Waves band, metallic stylus antenna freely dimensionable and inclinable for the best reception. Multiple search options and a wide range of customizable general memories with 12 alphanumeric characters, the number of allocations in a memory bank can be increased by decreasing the space of another bank in proportion. RS-232C port for PC control, with optional cable.

AR-8200 Mark III performance and practical notes :

This scanner is the successor of the AR-8000, a successful receiver with regard to the then innovative performance. The AR-8200 improves and broadens the features making the device one of the few handsets able to cover such a large frequency range even in SSB mode. In fact, the availability of a filter with a reasonable bandwidth (3 KHz) really opens up to the demanding ratings of these emissions. This is in HF bands, where the dynamic-range is not comparable to the typical values of a desktop receiver, and on higher frequencies where in addition to listening ham-radio signals you can appreciate the possibility of adopting the SSB as a technique to analyze narrow band transmissions even if they employ other modulations.

Overall, the receiver does not disappoint expectations by showing a balance between the key factors of sensitivity and resistance to intermodulation. Wanting to highlight the deficits, however, the attention focuses on two points: as for the predecessor we note especially in the VHF a not optimal rejection to the spurious signals due to the image frequencies, this in the AR-8000 assumed a greater weight therefore demonstration of a quality leap in the new design. Another detail concerns the keyboard on the front-panel that tend to wear out over time. It is advisable to take care to verify their function when you are about to make the purchase of a used receiver.
